A large gathering of people decked out in costumes helped celebrate the Fremont Troll’s 20th birthday on Saturday.

The annual celebration known as Trolloween brought out a couple hundred revelers for this year’s theme of “Dante’s Inferno”.

Music and performance kicked off the evening under the Aurora Bridge before the “Haunt of Fremont” began through the neighborhood.

The Seattle Police Department escorted the procession through the heart of Fremont to the final destination below the Fremont Bridge.

The evening concluded with a performance of “Dante’s Inferno” under the bridge, including a stunning aerial and fire dance by the Cabiri and various performances on multiple stages.

Trolloween, the yearly event that celebrates the birth of the Fremont Troll, is expected to bring out hundreds of performers and people on Halloween night (that’s tomorrow!) This is a photo of what last year’s celebration looked like. (Thanks to Marcus for the picture.)

This year marks the Troll’s 20th birthday, and in celebration of the day, this year’s theme will be Dante’s Inferno. Rain or not, everyone is invited to join in the merriment through Fremont that begins at the Troll at 7:00 p.m. Following the procession, there will be an aerial dance performance of Daedalus by the Cabiri. If it’s raining, the show will take place under the Fremont Bridge. If not, they’ll be in the lot across from Theo Chocolate.
Seattle Police Department will be escorting this year’s parade, which starts under the Aurora Bridge at the Troll (N. 36th St. and Troll Ave N.) From there, the route looks like this:
The “Haunt of Fremont” heads west on 36th to Evanston Avenue N; south on Evanston to N 35th Street; west on 35th to First Avenue NW; south on First Ave NW to N Canal Street (which is closed from First Ave NW to Phinney Avenue N for a performance of Dante’s Inferno); east on Canal to N 34th Street; east on 34th to Evanston; south on Evanston to private street; east on private street to the Fremont Bridge.
These streets will be closed on Saturday for Trolloween:
- 3:00-10:00 p.m. - N. Canal St. between 1st Ave NW and Phinney Ave N.
- 4:30-8:00 p.m. - N. 36th St. adjacent to the Troll between Linden Ave N. and Whitman Ave N.

Fremont is known for its “whimsical counterculture” — at least if you believe the New York Times (see the post below) — and one of the best times to take that in is during Halloween, when for a day, counterculture is on full display. Among the Halloween events in Fremont, there’s a costume extravaganza, a burlesque carnival and a mass gathering of Carnivale-style revelers who parade through neighborhood streets. Here are the details:
- Boo- A costume extravaganza and fundraiser for the Fremont Chamber of Commerce at Fremont Studios. The 21+ dance party will feature costume contests, a full bar, and a cigar lounge.
- Circus Contraption’s Blowout Bash- The one-ring circus’ 10th annual Scary! Insane!! Blowout Bash is sold out, but you may be able to find tickets on Craigslist, etc. The burlesque carnival will feature aerialists, clowns, ninjas, and a seance. This event, held in Theo Chocolate’s building is also 21+.
- Trolloween- An unpublicized gathering of costumed Fremonsters has been going on for 18 years, and will feature a free performance put together by the Fremont Arts Council. Sources say the crowd gathers at 7, and will disappear like aether shortly after the performance to parade through Fremont. Samba dance lessons will commence, and the evening will end with a dance under the Fremont Bridge.
If you have any Halloween haunts to add, please leave us a comment or e-mail tips@fremontuniverse.com

Members of the Fremont Arts Council (FAC) spent part of a beautiful October afternoon cleaning up the troll and its environment for Trolloween. Trolloween is a ‘birthday’ celebration of sorts for the troll, and volunteers said they usually see 300+ people on Halloween night who come dressed up to watch a performance and then parade through Fremont.

The FAC has been cleaning the troll in preparation for the celebration every year for the past 19 years that Trolloween has been celebrated. More information is available on their site, including details about the performance- a mixture of Shakespeare and Greek lore. Stay tuned for more details about Halloween happenings throughout Fremont.
