Fremont 5K & Briefcase Relay This Friday

June 6th, 2011 by Sean Keeley

The annual Fremont 5K & Briefcase Relay is coming up on Friday, June 10th at 6:00 p.m.

If you’re not familiar with the Briefcase Relay, teams consist of 5 people who each run one kilometer of the 5K course while dressed from the waist up in business attire. Each team must carry a briefcase that is relayed from team member to the next until the last (the 5th) team member crosses the finish line. Click here to see the course route and the four briefcase relay exchange zone locations.

Briefcase relay participants are also being asked to carry 5 cans of food in their briefcases that then will be donated to Solid Ground.

Participants can run or walk in the 5K run/walk that takes place at 7:00pm. With a relatively flat and very fast 3.1 mile course that runs on the streets near Fremont, this USATF certified course attracts both the local elite runners as well as those who are looking for a little exercise prior to spending the evening in the beer garden.

Strollers and leashed dogs are both allowed in the 5K.

As with the year’s past, this year’s event is implementing a number of green-focused initiatives while participants are asked to help with cash & food donations to support Solid Ground.

Get all the other info you need such as fees, schedules and locations at the official site and check out the Facebook page for any last-minute updates.

Solid Ground Strikes Out Hunger With Bowl-a-thon

February 24th, 2011 by Sean Keeley

Grab your favorite bowling shirt and lace up your shoes. Solid Ground is looking for teams to participate in their annual Strike Out Hunger Bowl-a-thon at West Seattle Bowl (4505 39th Ave SW) on Saturday, April 9.

The event will raise money and awareness for the group’s Food Security for Children program, which keeps Seattle-area food banks (including Ballard, Greenwood, Phinney Ridge, Lutheran and the Wallingford Family Works food banks) stocked with formula and healthy baby food for infants and toddlers.

April 1 is the deadline for teams of four to six to register. Individuals are also welcome to sign up.

For registration and pledge forms, see http://www.solid-ground.org/News/bowl/Pages/default.aspx. Each bowler who raises $200 or more in tax-deductible donations receives a special prize. Start times are at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Solid Ground Community Lunch Friday

May 20th, 2010 by Athima Chansanchai

It’s time again for Solid Ground‘s Annual Luncheon. This year it is at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center
(800 Convention Place, 6th Floor, Rooms A & B) from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. tomorrow (May 21). It is one of the organization’s most important outreach and fundraising tools, raising critical support for its 27 programs working to end poverty in Seattle/King County.

This is our 10th year of breaking bread, sharing passion for this work, and recommitting to making a more just and caring community. The Luncheon fertilizes our efforts to address the real needs of hard-working people. Guests at the Luncheon will be asked to make a gift of at least $150.

Bryant TerryKeynote speaker Bryant Terry is an eco chef, food justice activist, author and currently a fellow of the Food and Society Policy Fellows Program, a national project of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. For the past nine years he has worked to build a more just and sustainable food system using cooking as a tool to illuminate the intersections between poverty, structural racism and food insecurity.

At the luncheon, examine hunger in the community and successful strategies to make healthy food more available, affordable and equitable. “Growing Community to End Poverty” – the theme of the event – will feature Solid Ground’s Marra Farm Giving Garden (which is how I first heard about Solid Ground – then the Fremont Public Association), Lettuce Link, Operation Frontline, Apple Corps and other aspects of its anti-hunger work. They will also unveil plans for a new Community Farm in the Rainier Valley.

If you can’t make it to the luncheon this year, you can also contribute via a match pool. So far, $27,400 has been raised to match gifts of $250 or more at the luncheon, which is very close to the goal of $30,000.

To reserve your spot at the 2010 Luncheon, please contact Anna Ramos at annar@solid-ground.org or 206.694.6857.
