Homegrown sandwich shop off to good start

March 31st, 2009 by Geeky Swedes

In the neighborhood that brought you the popular Paseo, a new sandwich shop called Homegrown has opened its doors on Fremont Ave. N.

And like Paseo, it’s been busy. “Our goal at Homegrown is not only to create sandwiches out of sustainable ingredients but also to make sandwich creation sustainable itself,” explains the website. A few of the sandwiches on the menu: the blackened cod, flank steak, South Carolina-style smoked pork and the farmers market veggie. They also have soups and salads.

Have you eaten there? Leave a review below…

Baja Fresh closes up shop

March 2nd, 2009 by Geeky Swedes

The Baja Fresh restaurant, right across from Peet’s Coffee at the entrance of the Fremont Bridge, has closed down for good.

“We thank our loyal customers,” a sign on the door says. “Please visit our other locations.” Those locations are Redmond and Everett, a little too far for the Fremont tech crowd to drive for lunch. This has been coming for quite some time — Baja Fresh has had a “for lease” sign in the window for several months now. (Thanks Nick, JR and Jeff for the tips!)

Out goes Kiwi, in comes Lucky’s Pho

March 1st, 2009 by Geeky Swedes

Just a few months after opening in Sonic Boom’s old spot on Fremont Ave., the frozen yogurt place Kiwi has become a noodle place called Lucky’s Pho.

It will be opening “soon,” according to a sign in the window. “I will be elated to cure my Saturday hangovers with a bowl of veggie pho right in my own neighborhood,” writes Fremont Universe reader Brandi on her blog. (Thanks for the tip Brandi, Jeff and Michael!)

Taco Del Mar to reopen in a month

February 22nd, 2009 by Geeky Swedes

Taco Del Mar next to Lenin is closed due to “water problems,” according to the sign on the door. “Lets hope they didn’t shut down for good!” said Fremont Universe reader Nick in an email tipping us on the closure.

We called and were told the restaurant is making some changes in the kitchen, and the permits are taking longer than anticipated. Taco Del Mar hopes to reopen within the next month.

Kiwi opens in Fremont

January 29th, 2009 by Beth

Kiwi, the new frozen yogurt store that once had “Mooberry Coming Soon” taped across the window has opened in downtown Fremont, but without particularly positive reviews. Seattlest wrote a short but scathing review, but reviews on Yelp were slightly more positive. One surprising note: Kiwi will eventually be offering hot dogs. Anyone have any additional comments or has it been too cold to test frozen yogurt?

New in Fremont: pizza, more pizza and fish

January 25th, 2009 by Geeky Swedes

We have some new additions in Fremont over the last few weeks:

Just before the first of the year, Via Tribunali opened on Fremont Ave near 43rd, right next door to Cafe Vita. The Neapolitan-style pizza place is well-known in Capitol Hill and Queen Anne.

Their latest restaurant features the same wood-fired, Old-World style of pizza.

On Leary and 39th, at the old space of Hoki’s Teriyaki Hut, is another new pizza restaurant called “Aberonas.” More than pizza, the new lunch spot features pasta, calzones, sandwiches and salads — with a Greek twist.

Just up a few blocks from Alberonas at 36th St. near 1st Ave., Seattle Fish Company has opened for business. It’s their second shop in Seattle.

Seattle Fish is known for, well, very fresh fish. A quick scan of the display cases reveals a wide variety of the good stuff, including ahi tuna with that deep red hue. Coming as soon as the liquor license is approved: wine sales.

If you’ve stopped by Via Tribunali, Aberonas or Seattle Fish, please let us what you think in comments below…

October 13th, 2008 by Geeky Swedes

We stopped by the Veraci Pizza oven at the Fremont Market on Sunday to get an update on their preparations to open their first restaurant.

They said they’re planning to open October 29th on Market St. and 6th Ave in Ballard. That makes two restaurant startups in the same month launched by successful food vendors at the weekend markets.

Silence-Heart-Nest temporarily closed

October 11th, 2008 by Beth

Silence-Heart-Nest is closed until Wednesday, October 15. The staff is currently in New York observing the one-year anniversary of Sri Chinmoy’s passing. Chinmoy is the Indian spiritual teacher and philosopher whose work inspired the creation of the restaurant, as well as its name.

The restaurant normally closes two other times during the year — once in mid-April to celebrate Chinmoy’s 1964 emigration to the U.S., and once in late August to celebrate his birthday.

New organic sandwich shop coming to Fremont

September 15th, 2008 by Geeky Swedes

“Homegrown” is a new organic salad and sandwich shop moving into the north half of the old Sonic Boom location on Fremont Ave. They pride themselves in being a sustainable, homegrown alternative for those who don’t want to sacrifice their lifestyle in order to eat out. The sign on the door says they’ll be open in the spring of 2009. (Thanks Christian for the tip!)

Meanwhile, the smoothie and frozen yogurt shop Mooberry is planning to open soon on the south half of the old Sonic Boom store.

After planning to close by Labor Day, Asteroid Cafe is still open with a new owner on the way. All the details have yet to be ironed out, but current owner Marlin Hathaway hopes to finalize the sale by October. In the meantime, Asteroid is open with new hours: 5 to 10 p.m. Wednesdays though Sundays.

Asteroid Cafe plans to close

August 27th, 2008 by Geeky Swedes

With an $8,000 a month rent and monthly bills piling up, the owner of the Asteroid Cafe can’t keep up. The neighborhood Italian joint on Fremont Ave. and 36th St. will close its doors as soon as this week. “I have enough for payroll, but not enough to pay vendors and I’m three months behind on my taxes,” Marlin Hathaway told the Seattle Times. But things might not be as bad as they seem. A potential buyer has stepped forward that could bail Hathaway out if everything works out. We’ll keep you updated…

Via Tribunali opening soon in Fremont

August 16th, 2008 by Geeky Swedes

The popular pizzeria Via Tribunali on Capitol Hill and Queen Anne will soon open a Fremont restaurant, according to a liquor license posted outside an empty space along Fremont Ave. N. at 43rd, right next to Cafe Vita. It will also be next door to Rialto, a new Italian restaurant.

Via Tribunali specializes in wood-fired, Neapolitan-style pizza. We’ve eaten at the Capitol Hill location a couple times, and the pizza is excellent.

Paseo to expand to Ballard

August 11th, 2008 by Geeky Swedes

We saw on Ballard Gossip Girl as well as on our own Ballard Twitter page that Paseo plans to open tomorrow in Ballard. Sure enough, we dropped by and talked to some folks who were working hard with last-minute preparations.

Paseo will open at 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Gordo’s old location along Seaview. The Cuban sandwich shop will feature the same tasty menu from its highly-praised Fremont location. How good is Paseo? They usually win every “best sandwich in Seattle” contest, and it’s not uncommon to see long lines outside their Fremont location at lunch.
