Home burglary alert

November 15th, 2010 by Doug Alder

In the wake of a rash of car prowls, another reader has an alert about a home buglary in the neighborhood that happened a few blocks southwest of Woodland Park Zoo:

We just wanted to inform the public about a break-in last Friday (11/12).  We were not home at the time. It probably took place in the late afternoon, sometime before 5pm. The burglars broke in our front door (which was locked).  We believe they may have been interrupted, but still made off with some of our belongings.

We had just posted about car prowls near the Woodland Park Zoo, then officers responded to the zoo on Friday night after car prowl suspects reportedly scaled the fence and broke into the facility. Police called out K9 units and a helicopter, but they believe the suspects escaped over Aurora Ave.

The car prowl in question occurred at 59th and Evanston. Our sister site just to the north, Phinneywood has the full story here.

Warning about rash of car break-ins

November 12th, 2010 by Doug Alder

Reader Christy asked us to pass along this warning after her car was broken into in Woodland Park on Tuesday (11/9).  The thieves made off with her credit cards and managed to use them at a few stores before she canceled them.

I filed a police report, and the officer I’ve been dealing with said there were a rash of car break-ins that day (smash-and-grab style). They thought they had a lead when they got security camera footage from the gas station where they used my card; while they got a plate number, it turned out to be stolen. These people know what they’re doing.

I’ve talked to several people who’ve had things stolen from cars recently; it’s probably a good time to remind residents to not leave anything in a car, even for two minutes and even if the car is locked (as was the case for me).

Also, the thieves were able to use my cards even though they were obviously not me (I don’t know any men named Christy!) and didn’t have my PIN number.

If people in Fremont keep their eyes peeled for any strange activity (the break-ins happened in the middle of the day), maybe we can catch these guys. They know what they’re doing; who knows how many people they’ve ripped off.

A burglar definitely picked the wrong home to target over Halloween weekend.  When he came in through a window of the home on NW 41st Street, he soon came face to face with the homeowners’ 29-year old son.  After a brief struggle, the burglar ran to his car but found he was blocked in.  Police later arrested the man and found stolen property from several victims inside his car.  KING 5 has the full story.

Man attacked and robbed on Phinney Ave.

September 27th, 2010 by Doug Alder

A man says he was attacked and robbed by a group of people as he walked down the 3600 block of Phinney Avenue.  It happened around 3am this past Saturday (9/25).  The victim says the group came up behind him and one man punched him in the face.  The victim’s wallet, with about $270 in cash, was then stolen.  The victim had swelling on his forehead but declined to go to the hospital.  Police conducted a search of the area but believe the attackers jumped in a cab and possibly headed to one of the motels on Aurora Avenue.

The victim said the man who hit him was dressed like a pimp, wearing a Kangol hat and tinted glasses.  One officer thought it could be a man he’d had contact with earlier in the evening and showed the victim a picture.  The victim said the man in the picture was indeed the person who punched him.  You can read the full police report below.

Woman threatened at Aurora bus stop

September 8th, 2010 by Doug Alder

A woman says a man who appeared to be holding a knife threatened her as she waited at a bus stop. It happened about 9pm this past Friday (9/3) in the 4600 block of Aurora. The woman says she noticed the man was grinning at her before he pulled out a sharp metal object and charged at her. She ran away toward a large group of people for safety. The man then ran into traffic on Aurora on jumped on the dividing median before running into the bushes.

Police later found the suspect hiding in the bushes with two other men. He told police he ran into traffic because he’s a “pyro” who loves excitement. After searching the man, officers found a four inch metal shiv that appears to have been made from a broken spoon. The suspect was arrested for harassment.

Man finds female burglar in his home

August 30th, 2010 by Doug Alder

A Fremont man returned home to find a stranger inside his house.  It happened around 2pm this past Wednesday (8/25) in the 200 block of N. 45th Street.  As the man came into the home, a woman came down the stairs with bags and purses.  The woman told him she knew his wife and was supposed to be there, but couldn’t remember the name of his wife.  As the man started to call police, the woman begged the man not to turn her in.  She started taking stolen items out of the bags and purses and offered several apologies.  She then asked the man for food.  He gave her $5 and asked her to leave.

After she left the home, the man called police and gave them a description.  Officers thought it might be a woman they were familiar with.  They later found her at a bus stop at 46th and Phinney.  The homeowner identified the woman and police arrested her.

Three burglaries in one day

August 24th, 2010 by Doug Alder

Seattle Police are investigating three different burglaries or burglary attempts that happened this past Friday.

On 8/20, the first burglary attempt was reported around 4:45am at a business in the 400 block of N 34th Street.  As an employee arrived for work, a man came out from behind the bushes.  The employee later saw that a plate glass window had been shattered.  The burglar wasn’t able to get inside.

On that same day around 11:30am, someone reported that a bicycle had been stolen from a duplex garage in the 4200 block of Phinney Ave.

Finally, residents in the 3800 block of Fremont Ave reported that someone crawled through a partially open window between 9am and 10pm.  The burglar took cash and jewelry.  Officers were able to obtain usable fingerprints in that case.

Just a reminder that you can track crime in the neighborhood with the new Seattle Police crime map.  Registration is required to view police reports.

Burglary ring exposed during Fremont break-in

August 17th, 2010 by Doug Alder

A recent break-in at B.F. Day School in Fremont has exposed a burglary ring and a list of targets.  This past Friday (8/13) around 2am, police responded to an alarm call at the school in the 3900 block of Linden Ave N.  As officers went through the building, they found a backpack that had been accidentally left behind by the burglars.  Along with stolen items and some burglary tools, officers also found a notebook with the word “JOBS” listed at the top.  Police believe the locations listed in the notebook are places the thieves have already hit or intend to burglarize or car prowl.

The notebook also contained a page titled “PROFILES” with the names of 5 people, their dates of birth, social security numbers, and phone numbers.  Officers checked one of the names and discovered the woman was a victim of a car prowl earlier this year and had her wallet stolen.

Officers were able to collect some blood evidence left behind at the school.  Seattle Police officials tell us there have been no arrests so far but a detective is on the case.

We want to give you a heads up about two burglaries in the neighborhood over the past week.  On August 3, an apartment in the 4000 block of Fremont Ave was burglarized by someone who came in through a partially open window.  Police were able to lift several fingerprints.

On August 5, a commercial building in the 100 block of N 35th Street was burglarized.  A hallway door was left propped open and the thief came in that way.  The burglar used a pry bar to get inside one of the suites and stole a computer and cash.

Now you can file your police report online

July 21st, 2010 by Doree

Seattle Police Department has just launched a new public online reporting option.

The Community Online Reporting Program (CORP) allows the public to file police reports for certain incident types (Property Destruction, Car Prowls, Auto Accessories, Theft of Property (under $500), and Identity Theft) over the internet.

This service will allow the public to file a report at a time that is best for them without having to wait for an officer to respond or call them back. The public will be able to print a temporary copy of the report as soon as they submit it. The report will be reviewed by police personnel, and, once approved, the filing person will receive an email with a copy of the final report attached. The report will transfer directly into the Seattle Police Department records management system and receive the same investigation and statistical analysis as if the report had been filed by an officer.

This option is for low level property crimes only. It does not replace 911 or the non-emergency number. If the caller feels that they are in danger, or the crime just happened, or the suspect may still be there, 911 is still the best option. The Community Online Reporting Program is an option for people that want to report a low level theft, but do not necessarily need an officer to respond in person.

The web-based crime reporting service can be accessed by going to the Seattle Police Department’s homepage (http://www.seattle.gov/police) and clicking the “File a Report” Quick Link.
