The Down Syndrome Community (DSC) is hosting its 20th Annual Puget Sound Buddy Walk on October 2, from 1–4 p.m. at the Seattle Center. From individuals with Down syndrome and their family members, to those who know someone with Down syndrome, to community members who simply want to show their support, the Buddy Walk is a day of celebration to promote acceptance, inclusion, and respect of individuals with Down syndrome. This year’s celebration will include special 20th anniversary commemorations, keynote speakers, activities for the family, live music, food trucks, photos, and of course a walk around the Seattle Center.

Funds raised by the Puget Sound Buddy Walk support the DSC’s ongoing mission to serve and advocate for individuals with Down syndrome and their families through:

  • The First Call Outreach Program, which provides up-to-date information, mentorship and support to parents who have received a Down syndrome diagnosis.
  • Community groups including DSC Friends and D.A.D.S. of Puget Sound.
  • Community events like the annual Puget Sound Buddy Walk, Sweetheart Dance & Pizza Party and the Big Time Talent Show.
  • Education, including the Learning Program, bi-annual conferences and special guest speakers.
  • Advocacy, providing information and opportunity related to policies and issues affecting our community.

“When my daughter, Kate, was born, the doctors pulled my husband aside and told him ‘we think your daughter has Down syndrome’,” said Alison Winfield, DSC President.  “From that moment on, our world changed and we were scared of the future. Luckily, I was quickly put in touch with the Down Syndrome Community, which has changed our lives. The funds raised at the Buddy Walk enable the DSC to provide and expand their amazing offerings.”
