Fremont Peak Park work party on Sunday

The weather is supposed to be nice this weekend so it’s a perfect time to put your green thumb to use.  Friends of Fremont Peak Park have planned a work party for this Sunday, February 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the park (4357 Palatine Ave N).

Rain or shine, they’ll be planting 150 replacement plants in the parking strip and doing some weeding and mulching.

Last year’s weed seeds are leaping into action right now, vying to be the most dominate species.  Help us fight back and make sure our carefully-chosen natives and ornamentals hold their ground.  This is the best time to pull the new weeds – while they are small and the soil is moist.  Even Scotch Broom and Ivy are easy to pull at this time of year.  Doing this now means much less work later and it will help our chosen plants get the upper root.

This round of plants is estimated to cost about $750 so if you can’t help but would like to donate money, Friends of Fremont Peak Park will save reserve funds for future park improvements.  They also have an Adopt-A-Spot program for anyone who wants to adopt an area of the park to care for and maintain on your own time.

Coffee and some snacks will be provided at Sunday’s work party but snack donations are always welcome.  Volunteers can bring your own cup, shovel and spare buckets if you have them, too.  RSVP to info@fremontpeakpark.org if you plan to help so they know how many people to prepare for and expect.
