Police respond to weapons threat call

By Geeky Swedes · February 5th, 2010 · Comments

Police are in the area of the 3600 block of 2nd ave NW for a weapons threat complaint, Sergeant Sean Whitcomb of the Seattle Police Department tells us. We’re told that a man with a knife pushed the victim and then ran across the street just before 8:30 this morning. Police had the suspect at gunpoint soon thereafter, Whitcomb says.

After 9 a.m. we spoke with Detective Mark Jamieson with SPD who says this was a landlord/tenant issue. There were no arrests and no injuries. (Thank you Silver for the tip!)

To add to the list of complaints about that particular block, Praxair loads large gas cans into a metal truck every once in a while after 10 p.m. at night, often after midnight. I've called the police non-emergency line about it several times, called Praxair, and have gotten no response from either. The city will take the complaint if it's over a certain decibel level, but you either have to have an iPhone app or borrow a device from the city to record it, and since that side of 36th/Leary is zoned industrial, they may not be able to do anything with it anyway.

The whole block is a horrible place to live, honestly- I stopped running because the guys who used to live in the trailer behind the abandoned house up the street have moved back and sit out on their porch and make me very nervous- particularly knowing that one of them is an ex-con. And the white-haired guy that lives down below is really scary when he's off his meds, too- he came after one of the guys from the trailer/house with a 2x4 the first week we were in this apartment, and often randomly yells at people walking on the street.

I've lived in the same apartment for almost eight years now, and it used to be really nice and quiet, save for the sounds of traffic every once in a while. It just seems that it's gotten really bad in the last two or three years. I never know how much of the fighting that goes on over there is drunken nonsense or how much is serious, which makes me a little wary over whether or not to call the police who probably don't want to be bothered if it's a false alarm.

I used to love living where I do, but it's quickly going from obnoxious nuisance to scared for my safety. It's a real shame.

I call for every incident, honestly. I miss things from time to time- like this, because I was at work; and the night of that stabbing, the fight didn't get loud enough to trip my 911 triggers. So now, I call every time. I feel like a nuisance, but honestly sometimes I wish they would just park a cop car on the street all weekend- Evo's parties get pretty crazy, too, and we live next door and have potheads and drunken frat boys wandering into our parking lot to toke up or pee all the freaking time. It is a shame that this block has gotten so horrible. I haven't lived here long, but I certainly won't be sticking around to see it degrade further.

You would be amazed at the false alarm calls the police respond to, all part of the job, the same way it is for the Fire Dept. If there is fighting going on, call. If you fear for your safety, call. If there are code violations, call. Don't be passive, this is what drives good people out and ruins once nice neighborhoods. If you have lived there for 8 years, you are just the type of person the police want to help keep your neighborhood a decent, peaceful place to live. Makes their job easier in the long run too.
  • You might want to check into whether or not anyone is illegally renting out rooms in that immediate area. I'm not sure who you would report them to, but some one must care.

As someone who lives right in the middle of that vicinity, I can honestly say that there is one group of residents who have essentially made that part of the neighborhood absolutely miserable. At least three times a week there are loud fights and/or music at all hours of the night. It's getting ridiculous, and I after the last stabbing that happened right there over the summer I don't know how much longer I can live around there.

Anyone else know what I'm referring to?

I live right across the street from that apartment building and it is miserable. We're moving in a month, because it really scares us- we have an 8 month old, and it's just too nerve-wracking to have these jerks across the street causing commotions all the time.

I remember! We moved because of that stabbing - we were in the building evacuated by the SWAT team. The landlord was given a warning by the city - only one apartment in the building is up to code.

Were you up on the fourth floor? We were sad you moved- you guys seemed to be one of the only sane residents in the building. I'm so sorry you had to deal with living there, though- I can't even imagine- it's bad enough across the street.
