The Fremont Players present their holiday show, “Aladdin and the Magic Lamp”, as performed in the style of British Panto, starting Saturday at Hale’s Palladium (4301 Leary Way NW, on the Fred Meyer side of Hale’s Ales).  The 90-minute show runs through January 3 and also features original music and songs by the Fremont Philharmonic.

The Fremont Players have been performing British Panto since 2002, after starting out as members of the fire circus troupe Cirque de Flambe.  Since then, they’ve been active participants in the Fremont Solstice Parade, Trolloween and are founding members of the annual Moisture Festival which takes place every spring.

British Panto has a long tradition, going back more than 300 years. Often performed around the holidays, these interactive plays are fun for all ages.  Pantos can be described to Americans as a cross between Monty Python, a musical, and a fairy tale. You will see large colorful characters, men dressed as women, women dressed as men. You’ll be encouraged to boo at the villain and cheer for the hero! If you hear an actor say, “Ooh no I didn’t,” you can retort with “Ooh yes you did!” If you see something evil lurking, you may shout, “Look behind you!” Enough jokes and innuendos will be fired over the kids’ heads to keep everyone entertained.

This Sunday, December 13, the 3 p.m. matinee show will be a benefit for the B.F. Day Elementary School Foundation, which supplements regular school district funding for educational purposes.

Show times are Saturdays at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m.  Tickets for all shows are $12 for adults and $6 for children under 11.  You can buy them online or at the door beginning an hour before the show.
