Medics responded to a person who jumped from the Aurora Bridge around 2 p.m. today. There’s no word on whether the person survived. Construction on the barrier on Aurora Bridge, designed to prevent suicides, is scheduled to begin in January or February.

Generally if no information is released, its a bad sign. Tough times for many people right now.

So, what was the suicide rate before they put in the suicide hotline phones on the bridge, versus what it is now?

Just as an FYI - there are some recommendations on how to report death by suicide for the press that people might want to use here as well.
It helps to tell people that nearly all suicides are impulsive and that they are the result of an underlying treatable mental health condition (vs economic stresses - suicide actually drops during recessions).
# Over 90 percent of suicide victims have a significant psychiatric illness at the time of their death. These are often undiagnosed, untreated, or both. Mood disorders and substance abuse are the two most common.
# When both mood disorders and substance abuse are present, the risk for suicide is much greater, particularly for adolescents and young adults.
The recommendations are posted on the Web sites of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention at http://www.afsp.org/index.cfm?page_id=0523D365-...
• Avoid referring to suicides in headlines.
• Contrast “suicide deaths” with “nonfatal attempts” rather than using terms such as “successful,” “unsuccessful,” or “failed.”
• Describe the deceased as “having died by suicide” rather than as “having committed suicide,” since the latter expression connotes sinful behavior to some people.

This was NOT another suicide attempt-
His Name was Lance Loder-
Friend and Poet to many-
an No he did not survive.
He left many terribly sad-
and shocked at his choice.
Lance was his name.
He had a Name.
