Next year’s 4th of July fireworks in jeopardy

By Geeky Swedes · July 10th, 2009 · 7 Comments

The sponsor of this year’s Fourth of July fireworks at Gas Works Park, JPMorgan Chase, announced that it will not be picking up the $500,000 bill next year. This puts the show in jeopardy — the last remaining Seattle 4th of July fireworks show — unless a new sponsor steps forward in the middle of a recession. “It takes a special kind of company to do that, and I hope we find them,” said Norman Langill, the president of the company that organizes the show. “Otherwise we can’t do the event.

I hope we don't find a new sponsor. Let's lose these canned, corporatized events in favor of more meaningful activities. More cultural connections and less blowing stuff up.

I agree with anonymous: Chase knows we can make better use of our resources, and it's challenging to change any culture if there's 'nothing fun to do' instead. So it's important we offer one another activities that are well-advertised and allow for all levels of participation to all ages.

Let's use our resources to celebrate interdependence, come together for something spectacular and colorful (like a garden, kite-flying, eating together in the streets, dancing to local music in the streets, etc.) and BUILD our world next Interdependence day. Join you local SCALLOPS if you doubt this would happen in your neighborhood, and you'll find support in making it happen!

I agree with anaonymous: it's important to use our resources well, to continue to celebrate in our culture, and to have our actions carry meaning and affirm our being here.

Interdependence day could be a giant block party of kite-flying and trampoline-jumping (pretend you're a firecracker) street-painting (leave a mark on your environment) dancing to local bands in the street (for that belly-rumbling base-feeling)–(try to book your favorite band for your block asap!) bike riding block-to-block (drink all you like) and eating food from local gardens.

If anyone has a doubt that this would take place in their neighborhood, go to your local SCALLOPS group and you'll find lots of creative genius to make it happen for you!
