New Fremont brewery preparing to open

By Geeky Swedes · February 23rd, 2009 · 36 Comments

Redhook’s breweries may have left Fremont, but the neighborhood is still home to Hale’s, Dad Watson’s and soon, Fremont Brewing Company. It’s a brand new microbrewery under construction at Woodland Park Ave. and 34th St.

To start, Fremont Brewery will brew two beers, UniversAle Pale Ale and Interurban India Pale Ale, only available in kegs. “We will put our beer in cans as soon as possible but for the immediate future, you will be able to find our beer on draft at many fine bars and restaurants in the area as well as come to the brewery for growlers and kegs,” explains owner Matt Lincecum on his website. “Starting a brewery in the midst of a challenging moment for our economy is clearly an act of passion. We invite you to come along with us and enjoy that passion in our beers.” Fremont Brewery will open in April.

pale ale is not a real beer.

  • 2 Ep // Feb 23, 2009 at 11:36 pm

holz clearly doesn’t know anything about beer.

  • 3 Anne Hyzer Busch // Feb 23, 2009 at 11:50 pm

holz, why don’t you extol for us what is real beer?

Indian Pale Ale will make your tiny wang turn up and dance.

  • 4 holz // Feb 23, 2009 at 11:58 pm

    hmm, you’re right…

i’d just rather drink a real beer. pale ale is the bud light of microbrews.

give me a stout, porter, weißbier, pils, hefewezen, trappiste, lambic, koelsch, tripel…

the only pale ales i can stand tend to be belgian strong. otherwise they are typically pretty substandard.

Holz, take your attitude elsewhere. Regardless of style the beer is local, so I’ll drink it. If you don’t like pales, Holz, then order the IPA or go to Brower’s, order a lambic, and spout your nonsense there. The rest of us don’t want to see or hear your noise.

Notice to everyone else: wear a garland of hops around your neck to keep Holz away. He’s apparently allergic to them.

    attitude? it’s opinion.

so if sh*tbeer was local, then you’d drink it? interesting.

brouwers is overpriced, overcrowded, annoyingly loud and has terrible service.

Wow, it didn’t take long for this thread to get hostile.

I live about a block from this place, so I’ll be happy to try it out and help out with their marketing effort with a social media campaign and word-of-mouth advertising if it passes my taste test.

I can’t wait to watch them grow!

  • 8 Paul Garrard // Feb 24, 2009 at 4:24 am

If it is live then it is real. If it is ‘dead’ beer then it is not real. So a live pale ale is most certainly real beer.

  • 9 Pete // Feb 24, 2009 at 9:22 am

Lambic = “real beer” but pale ale is not?

    Ok.

Maritimes Dry Hopped Islander Pale Ale is real beer, and local. You’re right about Brouwers Holtz, but wrong about PAs - or at least you are drinking the wrong ones. I’ll admit that there are a lot of “microbrewers” who put out a PA as a bridge to reach out to people who aren’t used to flavorful beer, but that doesn’t mean the style should be written off completely. You just have to hunt around for ones that are worthy. Dales Pale Ale from Oskar Blues (in the can) is another good example.

Speaking of which, I’m excited that they are canning their beers. Canning has come a long way and is a lot more convenient than bottles, particularly for hiking/fishing, which I tend to do a lot of.

I completely agree with holz on brouwers. It might have a great selection, but everything else sucks. And friday/saturday nights are LA meat markets. Never seen so many fake tans and bad hand bags.

Also, while there are some great american micro-beers, there are a ton of over hopped nightmares. Learn from England/Germany/Belgium on how to BALANCE the malt and hops. The problem with IPA’s is they are not given a few months to mellow on a ship on its way to India. Hops was used as a preservative so they could make the trip. They did not drink them fresh. Yes, still bitter, but not overly so. attn: this was an opinion piece.

  • 11 bottomburp // Feb 24, 2009 at 10:31 am

If beers could have overhanging brows and could grunt, they would be IPA’s.

  • 12 The Other T // Feb 24, 2009 at 10:42 am

@holz: Please avoid expressing opinions in statements structured as fact. (ie., your first post) You’re probably smart enough to realize that your opinions on beer will antagonize other people. It would be more constructive to say “I don’t like pale ale because…” That way we have something here to discuss other than a petty remark.

FWIW I was in a pretty bad mood last night, and you made a handy target. Apologies to all for my vitriol.

And yes, if it’s made locally, I’ll try it. I support local beer, regardless of which locality I’m in when I’m thirsty or how the beer is made.

@dustbunny: I see the argument about NW brews going heavy on the hops. (And good point about properly aging IPA’s.) My counterpoint is that some people may actually like them this way. (Not necessarily myself. Not a big bitter fan.) There’s probably an argument in here somewhere about “pure” or “correct” ways of brewing beer, but if that’s the case then I support experimentation and innovation to create “non-standard” beers. Craft brewing is as much about the process as it is the end result.

    The Other T:

Hey, the more beers the merrier as far as I am concerned!

  • 14 Pat // Feb 24, 2009 at 12:07 pm

I generally find Pale Ales and IPAs to be too bitter for my taste–too hoppy. However, I really like to support local businesses, so I plan to give the FBC brews a try anyhow. Hopefully once they get the business going they can expand to include other styles of beer. We could really use a good local whit beer, for example.

It always amazes me how the liberal, opened minded, “old fremont” types are some of the most bitter and judgemental people out there.

Why do people care so much if someone has a fake tan? Sure its dorky, but I go to a place like Brouwers to enjoy the company of my friends, not to sit there and be mad about who else might be there.

  • 16 Sheila // Feb 24, 2009 at 12:35 pm

Ballard Guy, Fremont doesn’t have the old and new Fremont issues like Ballard does. Don’t start.

  • 17 dustbunny // Feb 24, 2009 at 12:39 pm

Hey Ballard guy. GO back to complaining about the homeless on the Ballard section. You are not welcome here.

  • 18 The Fremont Dosser // Feb 24, 2009 at 12:46 pm

Holz, I couldn’t agree more. I saw a Pale ale can in the PCC trash the other night. Although I haven’t eaten this year, I simply couldn’t stoop that low as to drink it….

  • 19 Banjo // Feb 24, 2009 at 2:56 pm

Can’t we all just get along?

  • 20 Guitar // Feb 24, 2009 at 3:18 pm

Banjo, I will never accept you for who you are.

  • 21 ben // Feb 24, 2009 at 3:53 pm

@10: The idea IPA was invented and hopped for Indian voyages has been largely discredited as a fun story (check Zythophile, Shut Up About Barclay Perkins, et al for some really interesting notes on the history of such brews). It was marketing then, it’s marketing now.

@9: You take a sip of an older Cantillon and tell me it ain’t a real beer.

  • 22 Frank // Feb 24, 2009 at 4:08 pm

Wow, I don’t know if it makes me feel better or worse to see that it’s not just the Ballard blog that becomes virulently snarky at the drop of a hat.

  • 23 beer // Feb 24, 2009 at 5:58 pm

    “Indian” Pale Ale???

    Is that from Duwamish Brewery?

  • 24 snoopy // Feb 24, 2009 at 6:15 pm

    Re: 16

You are kidding yourself that the people of Fremont don’t have the same “things used to be better before blah blah came along…..” issues? Thats ridiculous.

    Re: beer

I would be happy with a brewery on every block. I would be happy*2 if they all brewed pale ale.

  • 25 Sheila // Feb 24, 2009 at 6:26 pm

#24: we don’t complain about it like some of the Ballardites do. Fremont was good, Fremont was bad, Fremont was good again, Fremont is what it is now and will change again.

And who the hell are you to tell me what to do?

You are the problem, not me.

  • 27 Pete // Feb 24, 2009 at 8:22 pm

Are comments on the My Ballard collection of sites better or worse then those on YouTube? I vote worse. This is truly the Internets toilet.
