Google Street View has finally adding Seattle. If you want to show off Fremont to your friends, here are some handy landmarks for you:

Here’s the Troll, complete with tourists snapping photos. The Fremont Branch of the Seattle Public Library is a little hidden behind some trees, but still visible.

Here you can see the statue of Lenin. Further down is the summer cinema on the right, and Theo Chocolate on the left. Yum.
Google also got a great shot of the Rocket, and the back of Waiting for the Interurban. Any of you find yourselves in Fremont? Any interesting passers-by worth noting? Feel free to leave us a comment!

John Burbank called Reuven Carlyle this morning to congratulate him on winning the 36th District seat. With 39% of the vote counted, Reuven Carlyle is ahead of fellow Democrat John Burbank 65 to 35%, a separation that will likely not change drastically. You can get the latest results here.

Throughout the campaign and the candidate forums, Carlyle aligned himself with Obama, a strategy that appears to have worked wonders. “I am deeply inspired by the depth and thoughtful approach to our country’s challenges that Barack Obama brings to our public dialogue,” he wrote on his website. “I want to help bring that level of dialogue and solutions to state government and move beyond the old fashioned fistfights in Olympia of yesterday.”

“Sawit” wrote this comment on TheStranger.com after that site posted a photo of the suicidal man clinging to the bridge (see our story below):
“I work in the building under the bridge and this was what I saw as I walked to work this morning. I saw the man clinging to the bridge and could see people watching him from my desk for an hour after I arrived. I wish there was a better ending for him and I hope they put a fence up soon. We have seen so many suicides there that now it doesn’t really affect my co-workers and I anymore. I don’t want to be the kind of person who thinks ‘oh, just another jumper.’”
There’s no official word on whether the man survived, but given the circumstances and witness reports, it’s highly unlikely that he did.
Update: As R points out in comments below, the man died.

Updated: A man in his mid-30s jumped from the Aurora Bridge this morning (Monday) despite the best efforts of police and fire to talk him down. Officers arrived at 7:15 a.m., closing southbound lanes and creating long delays. The man jumped just before 9:30 a.m. Rescue crews attempted to resuscitate him, and he was rushed to the hospital. There’s no word if he survived.

As you know, a plan is in the works to install an 8-foot suicide fence along the bridge. WSDOT has held public meetings to work toward a mutually-agreeable design (that’s one of the early proposals above), and the state legislature is slated to consider $5.9 million in construction funding during the next session. If it stays on schedule, installation will begin in early 2010. More than 40 people have jumped to their death from the bridge in the last decade — the suicide place of choice in Western Washington.
Update: The Stranger has a photo of the person clinging to the side of the bridge moments before he jumped. (Don’t click if you don’t want to see it.) The Stranger says many people witnessed him fall.

Updated: Power has been restored to about 4,000 customers in Fremont and Wallingford. A Seattle City Light spokesman tells the Seattle Times that a goose that came into contact with a main electrical line. “If the wing span of a bird sitting on the line is long enough, it can spark an outage,” Peter Clarke says. The affected homes were between 39th St. to 53rd. and from I-5 to 3rd Ave.

A new wine shop, Fremont Wine Warehouse has opened next door to Anytime Fitness and the Asteroid Cafe (map). All the wines are priced under $25.

The owner, Michael Cawdrey, ran a wine shop in the same building 5 years ago. He says his new shop is focused on finding great, undervalued wines that are priced lower than the supermarkets.

Fremont Wine Warehouse will have an open house next Saturday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with Wind River Cellars visiting from 3-6 p.m. It’s open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m.

Here’s a unique way to celebrate Halloween. Two guys put pumpkins on their heads and streaked naked around Fremont on Saturday to honks and cheers.

(Thanks Michael for the tip and photos!)

Portage Bay Goods has those hard-to-find election knick-knacks.

In true Fremont style, most items are Obama gear.

Because you have to have the Barack Obama magnetic wardrobe. Or action figure. Or the pink “Baby Got Barack” onesie.
