Parking petition: ‘Keep Fremont Free’

By Geeky Swedes · September 3rd, 2008 · Comments

We wrote a couple weeks ago about the city’s proposal to install pay parking stations all around the neighborhood, and now there’s a new site called KeepFremontFree.com that opposes the move. So far, 250 people have signed the online petition. “Let’s deal proactively and creatively with transportation issues,” urges the site, which is promoted by the Fremont Chamber of Commerce. “More bike racks. Create opportunities to plug in electric cars. Develop better public transportation options and partnerships. And lots of other possibilities. Fremont has always been on the cutting edge and is ready to work with the city to make it happen.” (Thanks Sue for the link!)

The city’s deadline for feedback is October 3rd. More details here.

How 'bout we unincorporate from Seattle. Ballard, Fremont and Wallingford all the way north to Shoreline. Get rid of all pay parking, the mayor and the city council and put a moratorium on condos. Woohoo!!!

I work in Fremont, and despite making use of the free all-day parking in the neighborhood a few days a week (usually in spots vacated by folks off to work, and I in turn leave before they return), I'm in favor of some for-fee parking. The two-hour slots don't turn over very fast, and while that makes sense for some kinds of businesses, I don't think they're exactly serving the right purpose.

I love bilsemon's idea of purchased public parking--that would work with validation from merchants (even if the merchants didn't pay for the validation or paid a tiny fee for it) to avoid abuse.

The U District has something like that.

The chamber is pushing hard for no fee parking. Instead, they should be organizing to get together and purchase public parking for Fremont. Most of the great little neighborhoods I've visited in other states and countries have the concept of free public parking to attract people to their areas without unduly burdening their neighbors. Fremont chamber would rather just keep the status quo as it gives them customers at no additional expense to themselves.
