No sitting on the sidewalk, please

By Geeky Swedes · September 1st, 2008 · 10 Comments

A new sign has appeared right in front of Peet’s Coffee.

It refers to this city law, which states: “No person shall sit or lie down upon a public sidewalk, or upon a blanket, chair, stool, or any other object placed upon a public sidewalk, during the hours between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m.” Don’t worry, exceptions include waiting for the bus and medical emergencies.

Hmm…I wonder how this will apply to the Fremont Fair?

It’s for the guy bum with the long beard, torn pants -a couple of the stores have restraining orders against him because he follows people into the stores and berates them for not giving him the money. A rare win over the homeless legal wise as they are the most protected class in the City.

yeah - gotta keep those homeless in their place (which I guess is standing up)
    geez.

I’m surprised I’ve never run into him. I used to work at Getty and there is someone in front of Peet’s every day asking for something.

Not working so far. There was a guy last night at around 7 p.m. in a sleeping bag at the side of Cold Stone.

@eM. Are you really that dumb? Did you read the sign? Posts such as yours marginalize my belief in humanity.

why don’t you take him in yourself, eM? I consider myself far to the left, but sometimes the overdone, irrational liberalism of this city just kills me.

I see that guy all the time, he’s a sociopath.

this city puts up lots of signage and then don’t enforce the laws. they could make a killing in parking violations alone. i’m assuming it’s a low priority call for SPD and they hope that people will self regulate.

The guy obviously has issues, but a sociopath? Also, he does not seem the type that would take the hint.
